Experimenting with coloured backgrounds.

If I need space I rent a village hall but that's not time efficient unless I'm shooting all day. Pack up my kit and load it into the car, get there, unpack. Set up 2 backdrops, strobes etc etc. 1 hour shoot. Take it all down again, pack it up and take it home. Minimum 3 hours. The dining room is preferable! For an all day (or even half day) shoot though it is a workable idea. I've done that several times as far away as Leeds. I can get there, shoot and get back by bedtime.

As for rental studios, there's one in Lincoln (about 15 miles) and they charge £40 - that's C$72 or US$62 an hour. There's no competition for them. I checked online, in the big cities where there is competition you can rent a photo studio for about a quarter of that price ... but that's 2 hours drive each way. Thus I make do with what I can do on a budget and I enjoy myself without stressing about where the money is going to come from.

I think if the studio comes equipped with gear and props, that's a pretty decent rate.

US$62 per hour is a decent rate? I think we operate in different financial worlds, Dan. I can feed my wife and myself for a week on less than that.

OK, here are my digital revisions as per the suggestions. I did two, a while spotlight type and a plain pink; IMHO they both look MUCH better than the halo that was my original effort. Sometimes I can't see the wood for the trees until they are pointed out to me.

(I know her finger is right on the edge - that was a mistake but I wanted to get these done before the Ravening Horde arrives for Boxing Day lunch with Grandma and Granddad.)

Big improvement indeed! I much prefer #1; my tendency for for background spots is only to use them with fairly deep, intense colours to avoid a 'washed out' look that happens with softer colours such as this one. Enjoy your lunch!
