Extender question

Hello all,

I have a Canon EOS 600d and a CANON EF 70-200MM F/2.8L USM & CANON EF 100MM F/2.8 MACRO lens.

I would like more magnification for both lenses. My question is, are there any extenders that would fit on both lenses (so I only have to buy one extender)?
If that isn't possible, what close-up filter would be the best option for my macro lens? I'm decently happy with the magnification of my macro lens, but I always have to crop my images to get a decent close up of small object, and by that losing quality. I'm looking for that extra bit of magnification to be able to get more detail.

3rd party (Tamron, Sigma, Kenko) will fit both of those lenses. If you're not getting close enough with your macro lens, what you may want to look into are extension tubes.

Canon extenders only work on L prime lenses equal to or greater than 135mm and the 70-200 zooms. You cannot use an extender on the 100L.

Edit: You can also use it on the 100-400L.

So that means that I can't buy a single extender/tube that would fit both? Or an extender for the 100MM L at all?
That would leave me at having to buy a close-up filter then for my macro lens. Do you have any experience with those?

Really? Okay, sorry, I thought that Nikon was the only company that implemented that stupid policy. I sit corrected.

Here is the instruction manual for the EF 2x III that lists all of the compatible lenses. A third party extender may work on the 100L, but I wouldn't buy a third party extender in the first place because they already degrade image quality enough, and you're going to want the best that you can get. The 2x III extender does do a great job on the 70-200 f/2.8, though. I've got some photos with that combo here.

I think the term "Extender" has been used for both teleconverters and extension tubes in this topic. Extension tubes have no optics so there should not be a problem fitting any lens. Teleconverters do have optics and on some lenses the front element of the TC can come into contact with the rear element of the primary lens.

I "Think" the OP is looking for extension tubes, not teleconverters, since the goal was for use in macro work, but I could be wrong. Perhaps the OP could clarify exactly what they are looking for.

I'm sorry, I'm not too familiar with the terms. I'm looking to increase the magnification of both lenses with a single extension preferably (So with one extension the zoomlens would zoom in further and the macro lens would come closer to the object). If it's not possible to buy 1 piece of equipment that increases both, then I'm considering a close-up filter for the macro lens alone. But I don't have any experience or knowledge about those filters either.

Not a problem. They are somewhat similar in appearance except an extension tube has no optics, it just moves the lens out further which allows you to focus much closer. It's primary use is for macro photography and I think that is what you are looking for. Check This Wikipedia article and see if that looks like what you want.

Remember, teleconverters do increase magnification. With these long telephoto lenses, they will actually increase the maximum magnification more than an extension tube will.

The difference between the two: teleconverters/extenders multiply your focal length while leaving the minimum focusing distance the same, so a 70-200 directly becomes a 140-400, and extension tubes decrease your minimum focusing distance, which allows you to get closer with the same focal length.

Sounds like an extension (either the TC or tube) won't be my preference right now, as I would want it to work for both lenses then.

So I think I'm going for a close-up filter for my macro lens first then. I read an article that a close-up filter gives more magnification with my 100mm macro than an extension would.
Anyone has experience with close-up filters and can recommend one?

If you really want to get serious about macro, you could always get the MP-E 65. It sells for about the same price as your 100L, so it would be an even trade.
