Family Portraits

Did some family portraits today. I wanted to keep them just a hair on the dark side, just because I like the way it looks against the black background.
Black muslin backdrop with two speedlights in 43" Brollys, modified clamshell.
I realize #4 is a bit soft, but i really liked it so...I included it.

I'll admit, I had to do a double take on number 2 as I tried to figure out what kind of tattoo the boy had. ;-)

I love the last one! It is just screaming for a background replacement into a big city scape. :giggle:

yea, my watermark doesn't really lend very well to these dark backgrounds...maybe ill have to see if i cant figure out how to do a white one? or a white background for my black logo? im terrible with that sort of thing.

the "superman" shot was fun. I would love to take credit for that one, but it was Dads idea and he had asked if we could do a few shots for fun. Of course I said yes...partly because i thought it was a cool idea, and mostly because he was paying for it. it would certainly be interesting to try a few composites, if i can get the boy separated in PS well.

not sure im the biggest fan of this set. The black background just don't feel right and needs more rim/hair.

could you elaborate on the background?
we typically use black muslin, and when this client looked over our portfolio, the pictures he liked most were with the black. I really should invest in a gray backdrop as well so i have something in between the black and the white.
maybe some different colors? im certainly open to suggestions for new things to try.

I don't entirely disagree with you about the hair-light, but as you know, this is pretty much the style in which we shoot, and for this shoot we wanted to be consistent with what he had seen of our previous work.
Although... I think on our next set I will set up a hair light and see how we like the results. I can always shoot with and without the hair light, its not really a big deal. It might just change our shooting style a little. Or, at least give us some different looks for clients to choose from.
