Got up early to use the rented 300mm f/4 since it was the last day I would have it. Went to a nature park on the North West side of the city just at sunrise and for about an hour.

I saw about a half dozen deer and was able to get really close to some of them. This one is not cropped at all (was close enough that I clipped the hoof on this little one.) Just for reference, this one was about 2 feet tall to the top of the back.

Not going to get an f/4 and it will be a while on the 2.8.

@tirediron, I rented the 300mm f/4 to shoot for the long weekend to try it for a football game and then with wildlife. I had a pretty good idea that it wasn't going to be for me to use on Friday nights at the HS football games, but I had to make sure. I was right, I had to slow the shutter down too far for my liking and had to put it on a monopod to compensate for that. Did I get usable images? Yeah, the paper was happy with them and I was contacted about a few of them from a Mom. But I wasn't happy with it and because of that I would never be happy with it, why spend the money.

As for using it with wildlife, it worked really good on Monday morning. I was able to get a lot of images that I did not have to crop at all, which is nice.

It seemed to me that it was a little soft at f/4, which is another reason that I don't see me getting one.

I think that I will save my money and get a used 300mm f/2.8 one of these years.
