Film Stuck In Camera

So as I was rewinding a roll of film, I noticed that the usual bit of resistance wasn't there, and I rewound it for a couple minutes with seemingly no progress. I took the camera into a dark closet and after some feeling around, it seems that the film is completely detached from its original canister and is now spooled up in one end of the camera. Is there any way to remove/store the film without ruining it? Any help is much appreciated!

It can always be taken out in a dark room, but you'll need some place to put it that's light-tight in order to transport it to a developer. And a lab may not be able to handle it if it's out of the canister.

If it's b&w, perhaps you can learn how to process it yourself.

Do you have a changing bag (made for darkroom use)? What I remember learning in a darkroom course a long time ago is if you were having trouble spooling etc. was to put it in the developing canister, put the lid on... and then I don't what! Send the whole thing off to the lab??

Well, it is out of the film cartridge now... I guess if you have access to a darkroom or a changing bag, see if you can get it onto a spool and into a developing canister (if you're going to develop your own). Or take the camera to a lab with the film in it, or take the changing bag with the film in it to the lab... probably won't be the first time they've seen this. Couldn't they spool it? Call and ask a lab I suppose.

As they stated ... grab a black plastic film container ... go into dark place (not that dark place) ... pull out film ... place in container.
Take to lab and tell them whats in the canister ... they would be able to put the film into a film cassette (we had those just for this type of situation, though most people just handed us the entire camera with the film in it.)
