film vs digital

How many of you prefer to still use film cams?
Or do you suggest having both film and digital?

I use both. It depends what I want to go. Somethings I can't do with my digital camera. When I get a better digital camera I will use it a lot more than film.

Sure. Get yourself a list of everything you need and make sure you have good ventilation and can blackout all light. Mine is in an upstairs bedroom of my house, so it does not vent appropriately to the outside. I make sure I step out every 30 minutes or so. Happily, my 20 year old roof is leaking and will be replaced this summer, so we're going to address that issue in that bedroom.

Your biggest investment will be not just an enlarger, but the lenses for the enlarger. You can visit eBay for tons of incidentals like a timer, safelights, etc., and save a lot of money that way. I bought a long folding table and have my trays set up on it. I use a large plastic storage bin as a holding tray and toss my finished prints in it as I work, then carry them to the kitchen where they get the final wash in the print washer.

I'd love to have a better arrangement, but hey, it works.

I'm all film. I shoot almost all BW unless I'm shooting color for a client. I do all of my own BW processing and printing (except wedding proofs, those I get machine printed) in my home darkroom. The color goes to the lab. I enjoy using old cameras, and doing the darkroom work myself, but I'm also interested in digital. I think I've finally decided to get a DSLR. Everyone is sure I'll never use film again, but I just can't see giving up my old cameras. So until they install digi-sensors in my Rolleiflex and my Widelux I'll probably keep using film. Digital has a ways to go until it can compete with 4x5 film for BW landscape. On the other hand, I think that digital will free me from the lab for color work, and I'm excited to be excited about color again.

Ksmatt: I can tell you, I have a digital slr but I am still a film nazi. I use the DSLR for stock photos and random snapping but when I really want to play...The film comes out. there is just a great feeling in having a tangible negative, its...its...magical. and I love the darkroom, its fun to manually effect the outcome of a photograph.
