Filters

I am looking to start using some filters. But i'm not sure where to begin. I have read a few articles on filters and seem some very good shots with them, but i'm not sure which ones would be right for me. I do mostly landscape and city scape shots. I'm trying to get into portraits, but i'm still a newbie at them. What filters would be very good for the landscape and city scape shots both colored and black and white?

What do you need a filter to actually DO for you that you can't do without one?

The usual filters for landscape are the polarizer, a graduated neutral density filter, and a straight neutral density filter. From that beginning, Singh Ray gets into combos such as a warming polarizer, gold and blue polarizer, and combination polarizers with adjustable neutral density polarizers,...which take some learning to use easily and correctly.
