Fire!

Smelled smoke just before 6:00, not wood smoke, that nasty acrid wet smoke that you get with a building fire. Anyone who's ever fought fires knows the smell. Looked out and saw it coming from a few blocks away. Grabbed the camera and walked a coupled blocks over. The local volunteer department had called for mutual aid and several neighboring departments sent trucks. Good job, guys! A nice save.

I live on/near a river and have seen a few floods in our little town over the years that I have lived here. I always find it hard to photograph other's misfortunes.

That's one way to view it, another is to show your hardworking first responders saving someone's house. As a former firefighter I appreciate the job these guys do.

Being in public service I am able to capture a ton of these kinds of images.

Yes they often revolve around misfortunes, my focus is on the people that spend their lives trying to limit the misfortunes.

Been there, done that. Hardest decision I ever made was stepping down as an active VFFR. Despite the fact that I spent countless hours, many in dangerous conditions at all times of the day and night without pay, it was the most personally rewarding time of my life. Nice set.
