Hey Philip,

The blend mode is a small dropdown box at the top of the layers pallete. It controls how layers blend into each other. The default is normal, which means each layer is given is normal appearance and full opacity. There are lots of different modes, and each affect the image differently. If you experiment a bit, you'll start to find uses.
