First attempt at a Team Photo

My nephews Lacrosse season is over now and at the last game the coach asked if I would take an informal team photo for him. Just something for them to put on their web page. So I brought my D800, tripod, 24-70 f/2.8 and the only flash I own which is a SB-600. It was a severely overcast day with high winds and a little mist here and there so I didn't have much light to work with plus there was pizza waiting for them so i had to make it quick lol

Anyway, I know these are far from perfect but if anyone has any WB suggestions, or any other editing ideas, I would love to hear them. Or if someone would like a shot at the RAW files I put them on

If i had a few seconds to think this through I would have went 1/250 f/5.6 but I'll be better prepared for the next time.

These are good shots. Both shows a story in each...

I'll be taking some informal soccer team photos too - though elementary level.
Both silly and normal serious setup for the group and individuals.

They had the "official" ones yesterday. But I took the opportunity to take a look at how they do that and what equipment they use. And I took a quick phone snapshot so I could review it.

They key I watched for was posing.
the front row on one knee with the arm position for all of them. 2nd row standing,
with more people it would be different of course. And then silly photos are of course different too.

These look pretty good, Bill. First one shows every single face. In the second only one kid is partially obscured in all that "crush". The first one is a really good team photo!

Thanks, I really wish the one kid didn't get hidden like that BUT I also go this shot of him lol

You got some nice shots they'll probably enjoy of themselves having fun, the kind that captured good memories. I'd just watch your backgrounds and think about your vantage point and where you set up. In the second one there's a big pole sticking into the picture, and the other would have probably looked cleaner without the white line in the foreground and lines just on one side etc. Being an overcast day I might have framed lower to not have the sky showing or not have the trees chopped off (if it was sunny I might have wanted more sky showing).

I've found shooting sports that there are usually lines and posts etc. to take into consideration how they'll look in photos. Going someplace I haven't been before I'd usually go early and figure out some good vantage points to see how things look. In local arenas I already have my favorite corners and spots figured out!

Actually that pole is in both of them, I just removed it from the first so it wasn't sticking out of the coaches shoulder

And good point on the line, I could take that out easy enough too :thumbup:
