Hello All,
This is my first attempt at photo journalism, comments will be greatly appreciated. The photos will be formatted into the article.
Ink Bomb: An explosion of artistic skill
In June, a group of tattoo artists in Seoul put together and international tattoo convention. This convention was held on a boat, what a great place to hold a convention. Tattoo artists from Japan, Canada, and the USA were invited to showcase their skill and work. One could see the creativity from across the 32 meter bridge that you had to cross to get to the boat.

I had heard about this event on internet, and I love going to conventions for photography. This one looked quite interesting as I had never been to a tattoo convention before. I arrived about an hour early, as I usually do to conventions. This gave me the opportunity to hang out a bit and adjust my photo gear. As I reorganized my gear, I noticed that the artists were starting to arrive. The unique styles that each person I saw wearing peaked my interest more.
I waited about 20 minutes out front, as they were still setting up. Luckily, they gave me a press pass and let me in. It was a bit passed the scheduled opening time, but I didnt wonder too much about what was going on outside. As I wandered in, the stage lighting and music made it seem like a big party. I made up to the second floor where the artists were still setting up, this was a great opportunity to chat with them a bit and take some photos. The artists were extremely friendly and the staff was awesome.
I was there for about an hour before I knew the holdup was, I thought it was that the artists were still setting up. I looked over and saw a group with sad expressions on their faces gazing down as the first floor. There was a small group of police checking out all of the tables down below. At the time I didnt know why, but I heard that they wanted to make sure that no tattooing took place. Apparently, it is illegal to give a tattoo unless it is done by certified medical staff.
I had about two and a half hours until I need to get back. I spent at least two hours checking out the art work. A lot of the artwork was in portfolio books, but there were some live models as well. A lot of the work that these artists create are true masterpieces. In many types of art, one can simply just toss out the canvas. However in tattooing, the human is the canvas and the artist must get it right the first time. After realizing this, I started to gain a lot of respect for tattoo artists. It takes a lot of skill to get it right the first time and thats exactly how these artists present themselves.

This was my first tattoo convention. I was impressed by the wonderful job that the organizers did at getting everything set up perfectly. It was certainly an enjoyable atmosphere, especially with the great bands that played. I hope that the law will soon be changed so that I can see some live performances from the tattoo artists next year.
