First engagement shoot C&C requested

Had my first professional shoot, all the things I planned on doing looked horrible, all the stuff I went off the hip with looked much better. Everyone is happy but still looking for things to improve for next time.

The white balance looks off in the first. Otherwise, they're sharp and in focus, which is a good start haha.

Yeah I warmed it up a bunch on purpose. I warm couples and families and saturate kids and landscapes, I might have a problem. I over shot by an hour on this shoot because I was having so much fun, I can't imagine what's going to happen when I'm shooting a model, my wife may never see me again.

The angle shooting on number two is really distracting. There are a few exceptions where it works, but not here.

Yeah I warmed it up a bunch on purpose. I warm couples and families and saturate kids and landscapes, I might have a problem. I over shot by an hour on this shoot because I was having so much fun, I can't imagine what's going to happen when I'm shooting a model, my wife may never see me again.

Warming a little is one thing... making them look like they are jaundiced is another! I would tone it down a little, personally. #2 has good flesh tones.. much more attractive. The tilt is a bit much though...

Jaundice, that's a free tan! I checked the raw file and it was a little under exposed so that may have helped a little. It had the most likes on facebook though so I'm not going to mess with it on their CD. I'm a pretty white dude like the guy in the picture and I like to take some of that whiteness away so maybe it's something I'll have to keep an eye on. I'd have to say I agree on the second one but with over 30 poses it gets a little boring if I took them all in a normal fashion, it'll look great in a funky collage... ha ha

I took just a quick stab at color-correcting the first image, which I thought was over-saturated, and excessively green. This is my 15 second re-adjustment of the JPEG.

I'm not clear if she's a redhead or a brunette, or what...so my rendering could be off from her real-life hair dye color. "Does she or doesn't she? only her hairdresser knows for sure!"

I would be willing to be that the color corrected one would be even more popular... it is the pose and smiles making it popular, not the color.

I always boost my saturation with anything outdoor because I like those bright vivid colors, it looks a bit much at times but to me it make me feel happier. Kind of like the difference between going to a hersheys chocoloate factory and willy wonkas chocolate factory.... There are occassions I don't do it but more often I prefer it. I'll have to do a little research though and see if maybe I'm not pushing too much with it...

I understand! We all have different tastes... and what I think looks great, someone else shakes their head at. But it is easy to find something you like, and then add a little more here, a little more there... and next thing you know.... OUCH!

Yeah Gibson I agree, that's what I'm checking into... I figure I'll ask 10 friends which looks better to determine if I went to far. I'd like to shoot as mainstream as possible especially when photos will be posted on website. I'll post back with my findings... I was a little more worried my edits could be seen than the coloring, but I know I push saturation to the limit in a lot of photos, if you saw my kids photos you would think we have some wonder laundry detergent or something

I actually got 100% of the people I polled saying the more saturated photo they prefer, which I'm actually surprised. The girl in the photo actually told me one of the reason she likes the pictures so much is because of the vivid greens in the background. I tried to be fair and poll men and women equally but in asking only 10 people technically the next 100 could say the opposite, but for now I'm going to have to go with the gut feeling that I'm not over doing it. Thanks for the critique though, I think the next shoot planned is a model so the saturation won't be so extreme on those. I really have no idea what I'm going to do with her though I wonder if it's just best to go out, shoot and cross your fingers. I have a book of poses but it seems anytime I have something in mind I want to do it is always the worst shoot of the day and the best are just spur of the moment stuff. Oh I got a kid shoot too this weekend but that'll be super saturated which seems pretty standard for kids photos.

One thing I would check is your monitor. You may be adding colours and saturation to compensate for an uncalibrated monitor. It could be my taste, but Derrel's tweak is where it's at for me.
