First go with flash and umbrella

This was my first time ever using a flash through an umbrella. First time using a flash for that matter. I'm still trying to figure out all the best positions, angles, etc. CC welcome and desired. I know I've got a whole lot to learn. Thanks!

Not bad fora first go at all! I'd say you could have reduced it by maybe 1/3 stop; the specular highlights on the cheek and forehead are just a tad hot, but nothing major, and next time, I'd suggest raising the lights; notice the position of the catchlights is around 8.00 o'clock; typically we like to get that up to the 10.00 o'clock-ish position. A couple of general points: Remember, your camera will work just when turned 90 degrees (shoot portraits in portrait aspect), and whne possible choose plainer, less distracting backgrounds. The spindles "growing" out of her head are less than ideal.

Thanks tirediron. I wanted to take it outside, for a better background, but it was very windy, and I didn't want to risk an accident! :shock: I'll definitely work on getting the exposure right and getting those catchlights up. And point definitely taken about portrait orientation. Thanks!

I would suggest continuing to work on this inside before going outside. Things seem to be more difficult when you're outdoors and working with a flash and umbrella. For example, dealing with the sun can be a pain, and it can be difficult to tell what effect you're having with the flash. There's also the blow-over risk. Of course, you could get a sand bag to take care of that.
