First Portraits

Post the images, most people won't click links :P

Yep, post a few of your favorites here if you are serious about wanting CC.

Yep if we are going into a huge gallery , no sense in really critiquing something you don't want looked at.

Post the images, shoot well, Joe

I'm not a fan of clicking links, but it's Sunday evening and I'm bored, however your Flash code is so slow that I fell asleep after trying to look at two different images.

I think you need to not take all the shots straight on. I would suggest getting some head till, or zoom in closer and cut the top of the head off. The one with the baby on the floor, might want to try a different angle, maybe get on the floor and shoot at eye level for the subject. I would also look at maybe using a reflector to try and fill the other side of the face with light as well.

Thanks Joe very usable critique, to the rest of you, why dont you use 4 posts to comment the exact same point of view? :-) And for the flash code, i am using a laptop and the flash code works fine, so dump the amiga amigo, and move upward and outward.. If you dont want to click links then dont, but my web statistics show that lots will.. so there you are...Two of you even have links in your own posts :-)

your shots are ok... this is my take on them...

1st portrait.. boy with headphones.. has some spit, liquid or something on his face.. distracting. Easy to clean up in PP.

2nd and 4th shots - need to use a reflector to lighten shadows (as Joe mentioned)

3rd shot - The toy in the baby's face is cute, but I wouldn't use that too much.. distracts from the subject.

5th shot - Man.. eyes are too heavily shadowed... this hides the eyes, which are a primary part of most portraits. Reflector, or light fill flash... or just lighten the whole shot up a bit... there is room to do it.

thanks gibson,, very concrete and usable, the eyes of the old man is a definite yes for me, and i, like almost all beginners i am struggling a bit with the lighting of my shots:-) deflector is in the mail...
