Get a copy of Ansel Adams' 'The NEgative' and Bryan Peterson's 'Understanding Exposure' while you're at it. Extra credit homework. Yeah, that's it. I want a three page book report by this time in two weeks. ;p

Did you install the software that goes with the scanner in your computer? It should work. It happened to me too. But a little bit of tinkering of the buttons made it work. I have a CanoScan 4400F and an CanoScanToolbox 5.0 software. Both are included in one software disk of the cheapest Canon scanner. Only 119 Canadian dollars.

Or your computer does not have the exact specifications for the software to work. Sometimes it has to do something to do with the CPU. But it should work.

Even with the right software, you can't scan film (neg or transparency) on a flatbed scanner that doesn't have illumination in the lid that can be used to shine through the film. The vast majority of "cheap" flatbeds lack this.

Maybe you're right. Mine has. It also has a negative slide container in the middle.
