This is my first post in one of the galleries. I am really just starting to take photography seriously. I honestly had no idea that it would be so difficult to grasp some of these concepts. Here is one that I shot on Saturday.

It's not clear what you're trying to do here. If you wanted to show the sculpture, you would need to get in closer. Otherwise, it's just a shot showing what part of a park looks like.

I have to disagree. There is a random sculpture in a tree in the middle of the park. If I was closer it you would not know the randomness of this.

And I have to agree with this; I think the unlikely aspect of encountering a dragon carved into a tree in the middle of a park is what makes the image. In fact I will go one step further and say that if you could pull back a little further it might work even better! I do wish though that you would have moved a little bit to the right and got more of the dragon's back/tail in the shot.

I think some flash or other lighting could make the tree stand out against the background. The tree is too flat and does not stand out within the composition with the brighter lighting in the background.
This effectively de-emphasizes your subject.

Oh yea, it does look dull doesn't it... I hadn't noticed it before but you are right.... Would I aim the flash directly at the tree in a situation like this or would an off camera flash work better you think?
