first time photographing people

I would have considered zooming in and capturing just the head, shoulders, arms, hands, resulting in a nice tight composition.

My main objection is the tree trunk, but I like the composition overall. I see that your flash did not fire, but you can make it do "fill" even in a fair amount of light, such as this shot. I think the models could use some more light. Is one of them yourself? If so, then double compliment for the very nice self portrait.
