They are cool, 1 IMO the background is to distracting.

Normally I am not picky about bokeh, but the bokeh in the second is SO nervous(I can't think of a better adjective) that it seems to be all I am able to focus on. It's not smooth.. and it's honestly distracting. The house on the left hand side is the main culprit in that photo. For me, the BG is distracting to the point where it's all I focus on. I'm not sure if the lens, settings, or some other combination of factors is to blame.

I agree..#2 has nervous or "jittery" bokeh. The brickwork realllllly makes it look like it's oscillating...it does create a look though...and the pose, scene, props, and everything else are reallllllly wonderful. #3 is nice too. GREAT angle on the bridge in #3, leading right to the mommy-to-be. Nice! Good use of that long, lace train! So much more elegant than most maternity shots.

What lens were you using? That bokeh is god-awful (its literally the lens' fault though, I really like the photos otherwise). It ranks up there with mirror lens donut bokeh.

no I do not.......it was all about the belly, highheels, feeling like a hot mom, and environment that night

I'm not sure, but that's very unusual bokeh for that lens when being shot at f/1.4. I've been using that lens for a bit and I've never encountered an issue with the bokeh that's this bad. I mean, sure it's not the greatest but this reminds me of the $100 75-300mm

I also have to say I am loving the bridge on in BW too.....nice and crisp black and white.....makes it feel I donno nostalgic? Not sure but it speaks to me for sure!

Sometimes even a good lens can create bad bokeh, when the lens-to-background distance and the background material/pattern and the f/stop in use all happen to come together in a bad, bad way, which is sort of what happened here. I've encountered this before a few times, with lenses that normally have FANTASTIC bokeh, like the Nikkor 45mm f/2.8 P (the modern Tessar design) and also the 70-200 VR-1, which is/was known for beautiful bokeh. With juuuust the right subject matter, at a certain degree of defocus, even a "good bokeh lens" can create this nervous or jittery look; shifting the f/stop can usually change the bokeh rendering though.

THE THING with shot #2 is that the bricks are dark brown, and the grout is very light-colored, and there are scads of light-colored rectangles surrounding dark-colored bricks. When those cream-colored rectangles go out of focus with that 50mm at wide aperture , it looks bad; a very,very strong, fairly high-frewquency,repeating pattern is created, which draws the eye very strongly. The trees in #1 are more-typical of the Canon 50/1.4 EF when used on...trees! High-frequency detail that has very strong light/dark edges makes a lens' bokeh characteristics very plain to see, many times.

Chain-link fencing is another background material that can create HORRIFIC background bokeh.
