First try at child photography.

My friends asked me to shoot their 5 month old son last weekend . I am a total noob , but they seem to like some of the stuff I have done , so I said " yea what the heck ".


I did some research and found some cheapo props at goodwill. Below is the result of our session . BTW , had loads of fun and laughs ! Really enjoyed shooting the little guy .

Oh and free ,as I don't do this for a living.

I'm sure these are wrong in numerous ways , don't know if I will ever work with a kid again , but any hints to better myself would be helpful . Thanks again .

I'm sure it is a good thing I'm not being asked to photograph infants. I guess I don't understand the desire to go out into the yard, and obtain props. I'm sure it is just me, so to the pictures:

#1 busy background to the point of being distracting.
#2 same
#3 might have been great if mom wasn't also in the picture
#4 would be better if you had caught his face full on
#5 time for nap

The b&w works better, because the green backgrounds are a bit out of control. You could try de-saturating them a bit, as well.

See in particular #1, which is super-cute but visually dominated by the horizontal strip of violent green across the top of the frame. The kid's skin color also looks a little funky in that one.

Great poses, great use of props. Cute kid!

I'm going to have to disagree with Designer and say that these are really pretty good. I agree that the image with mom in it is a bit off because of her, but the focus appears very sharp in most of these, the exposure is pretty tight (slightly off in #2 I think), and you captured his emotion.

I'd have to think the parents are happy with these, particularly since they were free. Well done.

Nice set #4 is my favorite followed by 5 ....They make nice B&W images.

Gah, I love number 4. The expression, the baby neck roll... the only reason I'd want a head on of that expression would be to tack on to the existing shot and make a diptych.

4 is by far my fav. nice winston churchill face. for 3 i agree that mom is in an in between zone where she's a supporting role (literally) but not really a part of the image. however i think this image would be better with more mom rather than less. in 1+2 the green saturation is heavy and dominates. i'm normally a saturation whore, but this is definitely a situation where i'd really pull some color out of the background.

Would definitely +1 this comment.

Overall, excellent for the first try! I especially like the last one with him crying, is a great capture of his emotion in the moment.

Designer , thanks and I agree with you on most .

The backgrounds were kinda tough to negotiate as this particular park on a Saturday morning is very, very popular , and by 9 am I found myself dodging people to clear background . Note to self , don't shoot here on Sat. morning again !!!!

With the mom in picture , baby was having a fit so she picked him up to sooth him and his expressions were just so real and cute I could not help myself . I did try to incorporate her in the picture but she wanted nothing to do about being in pictures so yea it is what it is . I would rather have gotten the expression than not because mom might be awkwardly included in Pic . She'll get over it . But point taken thanks you .


With the profile pic he was pretty much done at this point so i was lucky to even have gotten that . When the say its over .....its over HAHA.

And the crying one I like because hey , he is pissed and that's an expression as well no ? and yes it was wayyyyy past nap time on that one .

Amolitor thanks for the kind words ! and Yea like I replied to Designers post busy park having to dodge people in background , totally my fault for not have foresight about that park .

The green thing I cant explain , I seem to have desaturated that to nearly brown and still looks like radioactive slime , cant figure this out . Thank you again .

jwbryson1 , thank you , and yes they were thrilled with them , luckily they are much less forgiving than I am on myself ! HAHA
