flash for canon

I want to get my first flash unit for my 350D but don't know ANYTHING about them so does anyone have any recomendations? :hug::

Canon 580EX Speedlite if you've got a big budget and you like using OEM equipment or if you're a tightarse such as myself there's the Sigma EF-500 DG Super.
