flash question

does anyone know if i can use a vivitar 283 flash with a nikon N65? iv herd some people say its fine but iv all said it can fry the auto focus since the nikon flash shoe has the auto focus assist thing on it. any thoughts would be GREATLY apriciated.

If it is a recent model of the 283, it should be OK, but it won't dedicate to your camera. It only has the single contact and you won't have the features that a dedicated flash would provide for your camera. If you don't want to take a chance, someone at a camera store could help you.
