Used my 430ex II today for the first time. Really just trying to work out the whole process as I've never used a flash before (with the exception of the on-board flash...but that was almost never).
1. This was pointed at a 45 degree angle towards my daughter, metered down 2/3 of a stop. The first one blasted her and blew her out.
2. This one was full power, but I had it pointed straight up and 'bounced' it off the soffit of the house. I also had a large glass window behind me, so I think it bounced off it as well.
3. This used the bounce method.
4. Same bounce
So as an initial outing, I don't think it was 'horrible'. I just need to work on softening the flash. I'm trying to avoid spending more cash, but if I need to I will.
