I am only just now starting to see the benefits of some post processing of some of my shots. This was a basic crop and MS Office Picture Manager fix.

Definitely an improvement, but the shadows got blocked/clipped (no detail).

I did see that the rocks did get awfully dark while everything else brightened up a bit. Thank you Picture Manager! I'm still trying to decide on whether or not to purchase a processing software or go with some freeware program.

By the way, thanks for moving this!

If you are going to get serious about post-processing, then you probably want to go with some reasonably good software. I do believe that Adobe will let you download their products and try them for 30 days before you have to buy them. Alternatively, GIMP, a Photoshop like product is available free on the web. I suspect that you will not be satisfied wiht Picture Manager for very long, particularly since Microsoft has replaced it with Windows Live Photo Gallery which probably is not much better in terms of its limited processing abilities. You don't state what camera you are using, but most digital cameras today come with the vendors proprietary software for image processing. Do you have that?

The camera was a Nikon CoolPix that is a couple of years old and at the time I took this all I knew was point and shoot, nothing about the settings on that particular camera. In the near future I will have a decent DSLR and will hopefully know more by then how to operate it beyond P&S! As for SW, I am looking at Adobe offerings and hope to have that narrowed down after Christmas.
