I did play with the RAW file a bit and try both a B&W conversion and a tonemapped B&W conversion, neither of which I was satisfied with but I was exhausted and will give it a go another day.

Or not. I, for some reason am not able to go back and re-edit with much success (to signifantly improve upon). I find that once I've culled and edited my shots I'm done until the next shoot. Not sure why
