Fun with Bokeh!

Canon-50mm-Lens-Bokeh-Comparison.jpg

I get round bokeh with my 35mm 1.8 ..... Why wouldn't yours get round bokeh?

I wasn't talking about 35mm, I assumed she was using a 50mm 1.8 which doesn't create round bokehs, but more of a pentagon shaped bokeh (the one on the farthest right)

I was using the 50, and i think i got round bokeh.. Pretty sure, lol But now im gonna have to Zoom in and check it cuz its gonna bug me. The 50-1.8 doesnt create round bokeh, seriously though? Haaha
Wide open it should be round.

It's only when you stop down that the blades start changing the shape of it.

The number of blades, and the shape of them (straight or curved edges) will affect how round the bokeh is.

The 50mm 1.8 only has 5 blades, the 1.4 version has 8. Not only are there more, but their edges are curved, so that when it's stopped down it's still a little rounder than if they were straight.

I don't know if the blades on the 1.8 are straight or curved...

Well I'm bored today so thought I would try this. Might even try a portrait with this in the background with some reindeer.

Now the arrow bokeh might be a bit big.

Anyhoo, thats what I came up with bored. Thanks PF, that was fun to do.

Some pretty cool ones in here so far.

I got some of the blank aperture disks for my lensbaby (it comes with the standard round ones), along with the 'creative aperture kit' or whatever it's called. It comes with a star, heart, and maybe a few more, I can't remember now.

I might have to get more of the blank ones - I made all of mine pretty boring. I basically just made a series of roughly f/4 apertures with increasing numbers of sides.

A triangle, a square, a pentagon, a hexagon, etc...
I made one that was just a bunch of random little squares too. That was the only 'non-standard' one I made.

I'm a crafter so I have a die cut machine.

Cool. Can it do custom shapes, or do you have to buy dies for it?
(No idea how they work. I'm kinda thinking it's like a really fancy hole puncher, lol.)

It does a whole bunch based on various design theme cartridges. There is one that can do custom designs but I don't have that one. Its electronic and hooked up too my computer I can create custom ones based on the cartridges I own but not other. If that makes sense.

Awwm those reindeer are friggen cute! Paper puncher tool?? or did you do any of these by hand?
That would be PERFECT to do as a background for a Christmas portrait :)

EDIT: NEVERMIND...:biglaugh: im a little slow.... Noticed the posts before mine AFTER i posted this...
A paper puncher *would* work great though! haha

What was your 'setup' like? ...or did you just hold it up to the lens?

I made the thing from the video. What did you do?

Same thing... except i forgot to cut little slits in the round piece to fold over the "lid". But hey, it worked! lol Im going to redo it a little neater next time. Kind of looks Ghetto-ish. :lmao:

I used a razor blade so my edges were jagged.. I'll probably try paper punchers next.

These are so fun! I noticed some of the sample Bokeh pics have a f/1.4 setting... However, my camera and lenses only allow me to set it as low as 4.0. I need to figure out why... there has to be an explaination. A question for another T2i owner :(

Just read your bokeh thread--- theyve pretty much answered that there :) prime lenses.... Yay!

I know, right? HELLOOOO?? I was oblivious to the obvious.
