General question

Just did a friend a faor and did a photo shoot with her and her son looking for feedback now cause im looking to to get a external flash for my nikon d-40 camera and i have one picture that came out dark for some reason can anyone help with that??

If it was dark, it was underexposed. We would need to see pictures and EXIF data to know why.

after that the rest came out perfect just maybe two three came out dark and i was using natural light out side

Based on your EXIF data, you shot that photo in manual, and chose a shutter speed of 1/640, a F-stop of 22, and an ISO of 800. What was your reasoning behind choosing those settings? And, to compare, what settings did you use for the photos that you say came out perfect?

my iso was set on auto

why everything else came out the way i wanted i shot in child mode then portait mode then auto mode

No problem!

I don't know how long you've been doing photography - have you learnt about the exposure triangle (i.e. how to set the balance between the shutter speed, aperature and the ISO to get a good image) yet? If you are using pre-set modes like child and portrait, I think that you would appreciate understanding what those modes actually do. I just did a quick online search, here's a link to a website that explains it pretty good: Photography Exposure Basics: Shutter Speed, Aperture, ISO

Once you understand how the camera sets its exposures, I think you'll find it easier to pick the pre-set mode that works best for what you are shooting. Oh and of course read over your camera manual, it will tell you what setting is meant for where.

thanks again i have a book on the camera i picked up at barnes and noble for nikon d-40 cameras and i use to do it alot growing up take photos kind fell off the wagon but since a recent tragic event in my life i got back into just taking photos ill post one that came out pretty good that the person liked the most

your settings are all over the place F22 and EV compensation on Manual exposure. ... auto ISO?

Turn off the Auto ISO for outdoor exposure, put it at your Native 100 or 200 whatever it is for your camera. Set your aperture for your desired DOF or Shutter speed to stop motion and adjust the reciprocal acccordingly. EVC is not helpful if you are manually setting exposre.

that second shot was done on Program auto...the camera is adjusting everything, that's why it' better but still your ISO is way too high. Read your manual and learn Iso, Aperture, Shutter Speed and how they relate to eachother.
