Generally speaking what type of photo paper is better

I know printing is a large subject but I just read on a Nikon camera comparison thread that printing on Matt paper causes details to be mush. I usually use semi gloss but what do people think generally gives the better results?

It depends on image content, mainly how much detail an image contains, and the print type (C-print or inkljet), the type of ink, and the capabilities of the print device being used.
