It was digging up the lawn looking for grubs or worms but when I went out, it upped the tree.

The cousins of your subject are doing the same on our lawn. At this point, I'm almost tempted to let them continue - a bit more, and the ground will be turned over enough to plant crops. Except that our "coons" seem to have been crossed with brown bears as they are the size of rather large dogs, and do NOT run away.
