What's new

Going to Europe. Memory card question.

Dude, stop by DC and take my all of CF cards for. Just return them with pix of some classy hookers from Amsterdam and we'll call it even

Well that sigma10-20 will be quite usefull especially in tight streets in italy.
you can pm if you need any tips on italy i was there very recently so everything is still very fresh.
enjoy.

For travel photography i would get a bunch of 4/8 gig class 10 Transcend. they have good speed, they are cheap and reliable. ive been shooting with those cards for the past year without any problem what so ever. I just ordered 2 new 8 gig card for like 40 bucks off ebay.

For a once (or twice) in a lifetime trip such as this... I would recommended taking multiple smaller 4gb sized cards as opposed to one larger 16gb. The thought of a corrupt file or the loss of that card would scare me. I would take 5 or so 4 gb cards and switch them frequently securing the ones not is use.

p!nK

Another question, since I seem to be getting some good responses. Would you shoot the whole trip in RAW or RAW+jpg. I say this b/c there will be some shots that I just want a point and shoot but probably not something I'd want to spend a lot of time on just editing. I know I won't want to fix 10 gigs of Raw images when I get back either lol.

@Pink, 4gb cards? Don't think a few 8gb's would work better? (not as large as 16, but not small like a 4gb)

I like the size of 8gb cards, and have been using the transcent class 10 cards for a while now. They work great. I would shoot in RAW or RAW+Jpg... you never know when you're going to get a shot you'll want to really edit, and you're not going to remember to switch back and forth. Estimate your usage and get enough cards to hold your files until you get back. No need to bring the laptop...most people wouldn't be editing or sorting through their pictures at night anyway.

4GB is safer for possible loss of files, but 8GB is more convenient. You have to weigh the pros/cons and the risk your willing to take yourself. Again, I've taken literally thousands of images on these cards and haven't lost a single image yet, so I wouldn't be THAT worried about it.

I agree to bring smaller capacity cards. If you loose one, or get a corrupt file then you are not going to loose all your photos from the trip.. I wouldn't be terrible concerned about how many to bring with you.. Only you can judge how many photo's you are going to take.. I went to France for 2 weeks for my honeymoon last year. I brought an 8GB and two 4GB. We had both a point and shoot and a DSLR with us. We did bring out Laptop, but forgot the card reader. When I noticed that we were running out of memory room, I went out and bought a new SD card. They are not hard to find. Maybe a little more expensive but not so much that it's ridiculous.. So I wouldn't stress too much about how many to bring, just go and have a good time!

And eat lots of pastries in Paris for me!! And Crapes.. And make sure you go to Paul and get a strawberry tartette (They are amazing!)

Feel free to PM me if you want any Paris ideas, I used to live there and that is where we spend a good portion of out Honeymoon :)

Why don't you save yourself some money and take some blank discs when your cards are full just go to a phtography shop and have them put on a disc or go into an Internet cafe and do it yourself
SIMPLE

I'm going to be traveling all over, don't really want the burden on trying to find an internet cafe and one that speaks English. I'd much rather spend 50-70 in cards than that.

Have you had your laptop stolen in europe before? Have you had your laptop stolen anywhere else before? has anyone had their laptop stolen in europe?

Hope you enjoy your trip. Where do you guys plan to go ?
I haven't had my laptop stolen anywhere before, but I don't have much trust in Hotel staffs lol. I've heard too many horror stories from personal friends to not trust anything of value there. It's not just a European thing either, just haven't needed my laptop in travels. Plus, I don't feel like carrying it on the flight, would rather my camera be my carry on.

We're flying into Frankfurt and from there we're doing Germany (small town where we have friends for 3 days) Paris, Amsterdam, Belgium, Italy ... that I know of so far. We'll be down there for 14 days :P Should be fun. HOPEFULLY getting my Sigma 10-20 for xmas, so that should come in handy over there :)

It's more fun trying to talk their language, it's easy to find people that speak English but when i'm away on my motorbike i try to go where there will be no English or English speaking, there is nothing better than having a drink and getting drunk with the locals, i go more to meet the locals than see the sights
