Hey guys,

In a couple weeks I'm heading out to Glacier National Park with some friends to hike and camp for a while. I'm contemplating over the idea of renting a lens. The Tokina 12-24mm to be exact. At Lensgiant its about 64 dollars for 11 days. Would it be a wise choice? All I have right now is my kit 18-55 and I'd like a wider view. I have a D5000 so I know I can't AF but thats ok. Does anyone know what the crop factor is? How wide will I actually be able to go?

The Nikon crop sensors have a crop factor of 1.5. So take the focal length listed and multiply by 1.5 which will give you your effective focal length.

So the Tokina at 12mm will have an effective focal length of 18mm. Your current 18mm has have an effective focal length of 27mm.

Ok, thanks! Would it be a waste renting it?

If I was going there (my wife and I are planning on taking a cruise to Glacier Bay at some point) I'd definitely want a wide angle lens. I've heard good things about the Tokina, I was actually thinking of getting one myself.

And renting is a great way to try it out for a few days before you have to drop down $$$ on buying it. I say go for it.

I'm thinking I'm going to. It would be a real advantage to try it before I really consider buying it. I want the wide angle for those nice landscape scenes.

I actually did end up renting the 11-16 because they don't rent the 12-24. I'm sure there pretty similar picture wise. I know they are different aperture and zoom.
