I've been offered a Nikon D40x (NOT a D40) with the 18-55 kit lens AND a 55-200mm VR lens for $450. All I'm really even interested in is the 55-200mm lens. But I searched for the D40x on Amazon, and the cheapest one they have listed is $375, with just the kit lens...if I could actually resell it for that, I'd end up only paying about $75 for the zoom lens.

BUT, I'd HAVE to be able to sell it...asking price is one thing, but if nobody WANTS a D40x, it's not gonna sell.

What are your opinions? Is this a good price? Any opinions on how likely it is that I could find a buyer for the D40x?

Keep an eye on Craig's List - you should be able to find a 55-200 on it's own for not a lot more than $75 and save yourself the trouble. That said, it sounds like a reasonable market price; not a great deal by any means, but a fair one.

Yea, it would seem that if you are that interested in saving $75, you might not want to inherit the risk of having to unload the D40x. It sound like you don't want to be 'stuck' with it.

Yes, that's exactly right. $75 IS a big deal to me; Photography is perhaps not the best choice of interests for a single mom with two boys in college!! But that's precisely the issue is that I don't really want to end up 'stuck' with the D40x; eventually, I'll buy a backup camera, but right now I need to concentrate on lenses and other equipment, and when I CAN afford a backup camera, the D40x wouldn't be my choice.

I was really leaning pretty heavily in the "too risky" camp when I posted this...I mostly wanted to see if anyone had opinions that would sway me towards purchasing it...so far, I'm leaning even farther toward "thanks, but no thanks."

Now, does anyone have a decent zoom lens (doesn't have to be 55-200) that they want to sell--really, really cheap--to a "poor woman alone in the world"???? Yea, yea I know...Buying and Selling section of the forum, Craigslist, Ebay, KEH....I'm looking!!
