First impressions: #1 seems to be underexposed a bit - you can try and brighten it up with software. I like #2 and #4 isn't that bad, but I prefer to see the birds coming at me, not going away - but that is just me. Number 3 is just a snapshot - not a bad one, but still a snapshot.

Cheers,

WesternGuy

#1 very nice exposure/focus/compo. I like that the most.

Thanks guys. I will play with the first a bit more.

It's still under exposed 3/4 of a stop.

In CS3 use ACR (Camera Raw) to check your exposure using the 'Exposure' slider. Hold down the 'Alt' key and right click on the slider triangle to change to the clipping display.

So i can do this in Lightroom as well, but how do i know what white clipping is ok? I mean, i set it so no whites were clipped, and the photo was easily underexposed.

I don't understand what that does, in CS5 it just makes it turn all black with a couple odd colors showing up... How does that make it under of over exposed?

The colors that show usually mean it's underexposed or overexposed. A perfectly exposed picture should be black. At least that's what I think.

Wait - I might be wrong. I was thinking of levels in Photoshop!

Unfortunately PS3 which is what I own and use every day at work will not open the Nef files from the D7K. I need to upgrade at some point. Just been lazy.

I'm using Capture NX2 and the levels tell me it has peeked. I have done another edit and bumped it up a bit more as well as warmed it up a tad as well. Having a a strange connection issue with the Internet here and I can't connect to some sites including this one so I can't upload the image at this point.

Sure it will. The files just need to be converted tfrom .NEF to .DNG.

Those parts of the image that are black are not clipped in any of the 3 color channels red, green, and blue.

Any blue portions are clipped in the Blue channel, red portions are clipped in the red channel, yellow means clipping in both the red and the green channel, etc.

Exposure is nailed when only specular highlights are clipped. If there are no specular highlights or whites in the photo determining proper exposure is more subjective.

Using the 'Alt' key with the Recovery slider and the Blacks slider also gives you a clipping display.

The 'Alt' key can also be used in ACR with the Sharpening sliders.

Not all white will be unclipped.

Investigate what specular highlights are all about.
