Had my gear stolen so starting over... Conflicted

So I had stuff stolen... Was going to get a 7D but bought a D7000 based on some research about it. For some reason I haven't opened it and a bit conflicted still...

Camera doesn't make the photographer - but, it does help... I am just torn because there is so much to love from both Nikon AND Canon...

Any seasoned folks willing to throw out some sage wisdom at this soul... Much love! Lol.

I hate the D7000..It's a great camera, but I just hate everything about it. Same with the 7D. Don't know why.

Also, coming from Canon, you're going to see how much Nikon color sucks.

For that kind of money, I'd get a 60D or t4i (if you want that sensor), or a 5D1 for the FF perspective.


BTW, I'm a Nikon shooter when it's digital.

Well if it is that big of an influence of how you feel. Then stick with what your comfortable with. I tried both Canon and Nikon and for me the Nikon felt and handled better for me. Also the button layout and menu's where more intuitive for me.

True you will have to make a unemotional analysis without the hindrance of sentimentality . Is the D7000 a better performer? More features? than what you had?

Are you already heavily invested in Canon system? Personally if you take the dip into Nikon and continue being regretful. Then what is your point in photography? As I do it for the passion,love and joy. And the system of my choice for me goes a long ways in helping to achieve that. As for me it is just a tool but the right tool for me.

What exactly is it that you hate about the D7000? I'm interested because that's the camera I have been assuming I'll try to upgrade to (from my D5100) in a year or two when I can afford it. Probably 90% of what I've heard has been extremely positive about it, so I'd like to hear more about your perspective. Maybe it would help the OP as well, to decide whether to keep the D7000 or go for something else.

OP: Like others have said, what did you have before? If it was Canon, is there a reason you switched? Did ALL your gear get stolen, or do you still have some accessories that might only fit one brand or the other?

I can't lend you much advice, as "what camera to buy" is such a personal, subjective decision. Also, I'm probably a bit biased because not only do I shoot and love Nikon, I aspire to the D7000, so if I got my hands on one, I would NOT give it up!
BUT--trying to disregard that element...

Can the D7000 still be returned for a full refund wherever you bought it? If not, I think I'd stick with it, unless there was a really compelling reason to want to change.

at this rate if you still have not even bothered to open the box you have decided the brand is not for you. something like that i'd have opened as soon as i was in the house(which I did when I got my D7000) how something feels to you has just as much importance as how it performs.

At least on the pictures of the frontside, it looks exactly like the D7000. Feature list also resembles D7000. Price tag - again close to D7000. Main difference is really just that its full frame.

^^ Agreed with above. Another Nikon full frame may very well be released soon but I fail to see how this info helps the OP question. To the OP, both will have things to like and dislike. So many have said before but maybe holding both in a shop will help you decide. The 7d is more pro-level but many say the new Nikon sensor is better. Maybe photography really isn't for you, most here would have 1000 shots before they even fully charged the battery

I think he's going with the idea that it would 'philosophically' be replaced by the D600 as the camera that Nikon tries to push on enthusiasts, because some people (mostly on this forum) believe that Nikon is going to try to push the enthusiasts into full frame to sell more full frame lenses (which have a higher profit margin). But even if you accept that theory, which many Nikon people don't, there are no indications WHATSOEVER, that the D7000 line will go away, to suggest otherwise is purely just making stuff up, and he's said this as if it were a fact repeatedly on this forum. Nikon is still likely to make a top of the line crop sensor camera. If any camera is phased out, it's likely to be the D5x00 line, as with the upgrades to the D3200 it will sit in a very awkward ground between the D7x00, unless the D7x00 line makes a quantum leap forward.

Err ... the D7000 is 2 years old. Thus there should be a new D7100 in preparation.

Alas, there is simply no real news around about the D7100. No pictures, no feature lists, no nothing:

The only thing mentioned is that there will probably be a successor of the D7000, just nothing more specific.

While theres feature lists and pictures of the D600 around. It looks a lot the same as the D7000. It has a price tag close to the D7000. So why is it unreasonable to think that Nikon will probably discontinue the D7000 this autuum and replace it with the D600 ?

Also, why should Nikon "force" people into FX ? They already "force" you into FX simply because their selection of DX lenses is rather small and rudimentary, compared to what you can get for FX. All the really good lenses of Nikon are FX lenses anyway.

If that is the reason, you should stay with cropped body since you have more lenses to choose from.
