Halie at the lake

I had Halie come out for a little practice session and here are the results. but honest, be critical and let me know what you think please.

I was thinking the same thing.

Otherwise, they're all pretty good, I like the compositions and lighting, but it's hard to get past the feeling that the last place she wants to be is in front of that camera.

I like number 4 the most - maybe because I love a blue background.

But yeah, she looks like she don't wanna be there, or you asked her to pose naked or something.

It's interesting to note how much broader Halie's face looks in the photo named Halie-3, and how much more slender and glamorous she looks in Halie-1.

Really good point there derrel. It is quite a different look between the two.


as for her smiling I blame that on my choice of photos to show. I have plenty of others that show her smile these just happen to be the ones I chose to show off of the set. Not intentional but something I have noticed I have done in the past before when posting photos for critique, maybe it's just something in my head that chooses non smiling shots. Usually when I post a said up I try to choose 4-5 photos to show off. usually 1 I feel is the best, 1 or 2 that I feel are good. and then 2 or so that maybe are new processing for me, or a new pose or just something different from my norm to see if people like it or not. but seems they wind up being shots without the smiles lol. for me on this one I really like 1 and 3. 2 was okay for me and 4 was the one I'm unsure on because for me processing wise this is pushed pretty far for me. really tried to push the blue in the sky and water and pushed her makeup.

Not necessarily a smile. BUt she does look pissed and its the exact same look in all 4 photos. You need some range here.

Beautiful model, but you need to do her justice. The background choices don't enhance the images. Mixed lighting in images 2 and 3 is awkward and unflattering. The background in 2 is good but the pose is not flattering and the bottom part becomes a distraction. In No. 4 the background is distracting and the view is not quite 2/3. Also the light is coming from the wrong side. She should be short lit. Control of lighting is key. Also her arm area is too meaty. Take steps to create curves and minimize the amount of flesh shown (sleeveless is generally not a great look for women). I agree the pissed off look should be used sparingly. Expressions sell, and people usually want to see themselves happy.

in 4 for this shot short lighting her would have meant having someone in the water or having a light in the water so just wasn't an option for this one I know that short lighting is better at making a girl look smaller, but I also don't believe it is always necessary. I don't really push for the whole sleeved look either because we both know we can tell someone to wear long sleeves until were blue in the face and they will still show up in short sleeves lol. So I just try to work with what comes. esp when it's just a shoot for practice. I do think I could have had her pull it up a bit in 4 so it's not just hanging straight down out of the frame. something to think about for next time. What are you not liking about the backgrounds, what makes them so distracting? do you think I should blow them out more? I wanted to have them in focus enough so you new she was at the lake.

You should try shooting her from different angles, the ones showed here make her look massive. #1 is the only one that is almost ok. Also, pay attantion to details like hair - a complete mess here, cropping arms, and framing so you can be sure that your model will look beautiful, not akward and pissed off. She's not skinny so you need to work with that body a bit to make it look more dynamic. Check out some works of Sue Bryce, she's a master of photographing this kind of models. And, I would aim for less contrast, it's a beautiful and sensitive girl you're shooting here, not a car

Hey it takes a bit of time to switch from shooting cars to get back into the people frame of mind lol. Cars is what I shot all summer long. So I am rusty.
