I've seen the term bandied about. What is haloing, what causes it and what does it look like? Thanks!

It's a post-processing thing. Can be caused by several things like sloppy masks or over-sharpening (different kinds of halos, but halos all the same).
Halos are especially common in over-cooked HDR pictures.
Look at these pictures. The halo is the lighter fade around the subject.
