Hello Everyone - Re-Post from my Introduction

Hello Everyone. My name is Emily.

I started getting interested in photography about a year and a half ago when I learned my family would be adding a new member, my niece. I chose to buy a point and shoot camera as I was used to the configuration and settings on those cameras and was scared of the DSLR option. As I started taking pictures of my niece I began wanting more and felt limited by my point and shoot camera.

I am still extremely intimidated by the DSLR camera and what I would have to learn but I know if I want to take more quality photos and upgrade from my current device a DSLR camera would be the best option for me.... or I think.

I guess the reason I wanted to put a post on this forum was to get some positive feedback about some of my photos (some of the better photos) that I have taken.

I want to continue to advance my photography skills. I am willing and ready to learn.

Your niece is adorable and your dog is PRECIOUS! You show compositional talent in the photos of your dog. I do think you need to watch your backgrounds. If you want a really exceptional photo that is different from a snapshot, the background makes all the difference.

Welcome aboard Emily.

Don't be scared of a DSLR. Many of the bells & whistles are just fluff anyway. The base functions of the camera are pretty similar to any camera used in the last 100 years.

There are some technical things that you should learn, but they are more of a 'photography 101' type thing....and not specific to a fancy DSLR camera. There are plenty of good books & websites to help teach you these things (and of course, this forum) , but I'd really suggest looking for a local (evening) class where you can learn from an instructor face to face.

You can get a lot of information from your pictures that will give you directions.

Child on the left - one can see the entire face, child on the right, not so much. Which one is more pleasing?

Same child, same color?
Look at the greenish cast on the photo to the left.

Child on the left, shot at eye height, it is a picture of a child.
Photos on right, shot from standing, it is clear that one is above the child and that intrudes.

and I suggest you change your profile to allow editing.
you will get more and better help that way.

Colour Balance & composition are the key problems I see in correlation in these images, Refer to advice and tips in the forum and you'll definitely be on your way.
