to answer your questions: I shot these in raw and manually set the white balance in lightroom. That being said, I might have set it a little toward the magenta because I was going off what worked with my 50d. the 1d seems to be a little different. since I shot in raw, I won't go into the picture settings, since they don't matter. I can't see any magenta in the knee on #3, but it is probably just my monitor. I will check again when I get home.
regarding the exposure/histogram stuff, I have always liked a little bit of an overexposed image for these types of portraits. I did notice that the more I recover the highlights, the more I see the magenta come out. There isn't any "true black" in these photos because there really isn't any true black in the photos. I looked through again just to make sure, but there isn't anything that is black.
like I said, I am still learning my new camera. With my 50D, I could pretty much nail the exposure every time, but if I treat this one the same, it seems to overexpose photos. Also, the white balance is a little different. I will play with the WB again to see if some other numbers make more sense.
