I'm looking to buy this lens but it's not AF-S. Stupid question probably, but does this mean it will not auto focus silently? Is there really that much of a difference? I 'think' it will autofocus on the nikon d60! I know it won't on the d40.

Also, is it worth the money to get VR? All in all, is this a lens anyone can use?

I don't think it will AF on the D60. What are you wanting to use it for? It's an amazing portrait lens, so if that's what you want it for I would get it and manual focus.

Yeah, thats what I thought. I really need an autofocus with my kiddos.

It seems like it's a high price for a portrait lens but will autofocus with my little d60??? TIA!

Yea it will. Consider, though that with the crop sensor you can get the 35mm f1.8 that will AF on your camera and it makes a good portrait lens too. It's cheaper than the 50mm f1.4 also. I don't blame you if you don't want to go that low with focal length for portraits, though.
