Photos OK to edit
I purchased a used 40D from a seller on Amazon. Got the camera today, everything seems good but the shutter sound is different than i believe it should be. It sounds like there is a low frequency hum/vibration every time the shutter is released. It defiantly does not sound "healthy" Does this usually mean something is wrong with the shutter? The photos seem to look ok but i haven't done any actually testing with it because i can't get passed the shutter sounding so off. I contacted the seller with my concern and says that I'm "probably not familiar with the camera" but offered to do a refund. Any ideas on what is the issue with the camera?

Take yours to a store that has a 40D in stock and compare sounds. That's what I would do. I'm a Nikon guy so u can't really help much more.

How are you determining the shutter count on the 40D?

Don't confuse the file number with the shutter count. They are not the same thing.

IIRC the only way to accurately deternmine the shutter count on a 40D is to send the camera in to Canon.

Nikon cameras have long written the shutter count into the EXIF data when a photo is captured as a JPEG.

I want to mention. I have noticed you are now making the appropriate capital letters when you post. Good for you!

Does the shutter count have an affect on the sound of the shutter? By the sound of the vibrating/humming sound the camera makes every click it seems to me there is an issue.

I'm returning the camera to the seller, they think something happened during shipping to cause this issue. I'll have to go another week at least without a camera now...

I have a 40d and it doesn't make a humming noise when I press the shutter, just pretty much the same "click" my rebel made before.

Yeah, there is also a slight vibration.

How many actuations has it done? If you don't know there's a program you can download free that tells you - just google it.

As far as the sound is concerned - when I bought my 40d (used) after only previously using a 350d and 400d I thought the sound was quite different, a lot more 'clunky' sounding than the rebels. At first I wondered if it was normal but I stopped wondering after taking thousands of awesome photos with it. Don't do anything rash like returning a perfectly working camera....

This might give you some idea as to how it should sound:

I looked at many videos comparing the sounds haha but the thing that concerns me the most is the vibration. Does your 40D have any vibration when the shutter slaps at all? From all the cameras i have tested none of them had this sound/vibration.

My 40D sound different from my XTi. But it doesn't vibrate.

BTW, to find out the shutter count of the 40D, use this free software.

I already packed the camera back up so i can't determine the shutter count. I did a bit of goggle-ing and found some other cases of what seems to be the exact same issue. For my own sanity I'm going to return it and find one that i can be positive is in good health.

Just on the offchance, but when you are using the 40D are you also using a lens with IS (image stabilization) because an image stabilizing system would give you the slight humming sound you are hearing each time you use the camera (it could also be AF sounds)

No IS, using a 50mm 1.8. the humming/vibration is immediately after the shutter slap.

I've never had that problem with my 40D. You were right to return it.
