Her 1st Trolley Ride

Teressa's first Trolley ride ever, and me trying to learn how to shoot with a Tokina 11-16 without the "cheesy" factor.

For me I feel like this would be better suited as a portrait. Since, I feel that way, I'd say there is too much dead space above the head.

Yes, that's exactly the problem... I can't tell, if you wanted to shoot a portrait or the Trolley. What is your "Main" subject? What did you try to accomplish?

If you tried to capture the trolley, I would say, that Teressa is a bit distracting object on the picture. What is she doing there?
However, if you tried to capture Teressa on her first ride, WHY did you put so much detail on the trolley and NONE to the fact, that it is her first ride - her facial expression, her pose, or anything like that? Background should be a little blurred in that case too, because it is distracting our attention from Teressa.

There's no story in the picture and I honestly can't tell, what are you trying to say with it. All I can see, is a woman in a completely empty (but nice) trolley, just standing there...

I was so worried about exactly how the lens was distorting, its clear I wasn't attentive to the composition as I should've been.
