I used a new (to me) way to get my color photo to B/W. I used New Adj. layer.. channel mixer. what do you think?

Well, it made me laugh when I saw it! I really like this one, and the conversion seems good to me. If anything, I'd say it could use a bit more contrast or brightness to make the whites whiter.

I agree with clarinetJWD a bit more contrast would improve the picture.

Another way to change to b/w if you have P/S then try <image-adjustments-desaturate>

If you are using the adj layer, I would play with the values instead of the contrast. I would imagine if you decrease the red and bumped up the blue a bit, the photo would look better. Try playing with the values, it is different for every photo.
