How are these lit?

They seem to be lit in the same location (the fence), just not sure how. Trying to look at the catchlights but unfortunately I don't have the high res images. Reflector?

Also trying to emulate the black matte look here using tone curves. lots of tutorials out there that I have to cram in so if you have any pointers let me know x_x

With respect to your question on lighting, it seems fairly simple: A single, large light source (perhaps a large window?) and in some a secondary light source, probably a reflector or V-flat.

The "matte black" processing, is, I suspect a LR/PS action which works on the tone curve.

Easy way to tell: Look at the reflections of the lights in the eyes. That tells you what size & shape was used, and where it was positioned.

thats good to hear. i've been going crazy tying to figure out the workflow. tone curves are driving me nuts

thats why im asking - i'm not sure by the catchlights. evaluating catchlights and how to tell what kind of lighting is used through them is still new to me
