How do i achieve this look?

Im aware that this is a video but i would like to know how to get this semi/ black and white washed out look in a photograph. If it helps i use Gimp 2 for my post processing [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7t7RX0Bwhj4[/ame]. Any help on getting this look would be much appreciated

It's called 'selective coloring' when the color is left in only parts of an image. There was quite a bit of just straight black & white footage.

A portion looked like it was shot with an El Cheapo plastic 'fisheye' lens attachment, that actually gave a lot of barrel distortion.

The only portions that looked 'washed out' were at the beginning, the backlit scenes, which usually resuts in a substantial loss of contrast.

So essentially, the look(s) are achieved by learning how to do photography and how to do image editing.
