How do I take an awesome self-portrait?

I never photograph things, im a total beginner, but when I try to take a cool self portrait, it comes out terrible, any help please?

Fujifilm S700 + Tripod

The cam is 7.1 MP but the pics come out blurry with alot of grain, any ideas on how to fix this?

What settings are you using? I used to have a S5200 that was bad at ISO 800.

More light maybe?

lower the iso, use a tripod.

Take it outside, during the day so that it is bright out, but in the late afternoon around 4pm so that the lighting isn't super harsh.
