How do I take photos like this?
By learning how to do photography.

The subjects are backlit with the background over exposed, and fill light is used so the subject is not just a dark silouette.

Actually, it's quite basic photographic lighting.

BTW, posting images that aren't yours is a TPF violation.
Photography Forum & Digital Photography Forum FAQ

* You agree to only post images and/or other material to which you have exclusive copyright, or permission from the copyright holder that you are able to present to TPF Staff....
And it could also be copyright infringement, which would make it a federal case since copyright law is federal law.

Posting links is OK.

1. The OP had taken the photo down before you had even posted this, so what the heck?
2. You're wrong.
3. Using copyrighted work for editorial purposes is perfectly okay according to federal law, like in this instance where the OP is wondering how to achieve results like this.
4. You're just being rude for no reason.
5. In no way could any reasonable person ever derive a person posting a question about how to achieve certain results and posting an example of those results as a federal case.
6. The issue was addressed and resolved before you gave your .02.
7. It is better to remain silent and have people think you are a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
Most who visit TPF aren't members. The expanded info is for those other's use, not just the OP and TPF members.

There was an article on MSN just today saying the feds recently shutdown 125 web sites for copyright violations and are cracking down on copyright infringement.
TPF is protected by the OCILLA statutes, but the OP is not.

There are in fact editorial uses that do require obtaining a model release to use an image.

The issues are no where close to being cut and dried. Anyone assuming that they are, is assuming some amount of risk by doing so.

From: U.S. Copyright Office - Fair Use

.....The distinction between fair use and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined. There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may safely be taken without permission. Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission. .....

.....The safest course is always to get permission from the copyright owner before using copyrighted material. The Copyright Office cannot give this permission.

When it is impracticable to obtain permission, use of copyrighted material should be avoided unless the doctrine of fair use would clearly apply to the situation. The Copyright Office can neither determine if a certain use may be considered fair nor advise on possible copyright violations. If there is any doubt, it is advisable to consult an attorney.

Meh. I got the lighting part on how to do this using a reflector and flash...check...I've done that before...just that when I have done it before, it just comes out with the person lit up and not that bright overexposed background with the sunlight flooding the image, which is the effect in the posted image links that I want to achieve...not simply just using the sunlight behind them for rim light/backlight... I think Derrel has the right idea on what I need to do...going out to try it!

MEH you guys...get so carried away...can someone remind me what we're talking about here again? I forgot.;)

But she is posting links, and obviously it isn't hers. Each link belongs to the original owner. She's not posting any photos without reference to the owners. A lot of people post links. Back off.

There is nothing wrong with posting links. Moreover, her links show DIRECTLY that they are owned by others. Like citing texts in college research papers. You're being ridiculous on the verge of harassing.

Before you came along, she had posted images, and then removed them. Had you read the whole thread, you would have seen that. So. Back Off!. :biglaugh:
