How is the Canon EOS 7D for first DSLR?,
i have the canon powershot sx is, and i want to upgrade my gear with a DSLR.

I think if you can afford it, and if you know you are seriously into photography, then there is no reason to skip the bottom end of the Canon dSLR line and jump right at the 7D.

I personally would even suggest the 5D I / II or III as it is full frame, but that is just me

i want to photograph all most everything,
what is the great differences between the 550d to 7d?

I gave a one word answer as sometimes new posters ask a question never to be heard from again. Welcome to the forum. Having had a 550d and a 7d here are a few differences.
Firstly the 7d has a great but complicated autofocus system, which basically means if you have a good lens attached it will focus faster and the camera can be customised to focus in a variety of specialised situations, the 550d af is simpler but will suffice for most day to day scenarios so if your not always shooting fast oblects or in darker situations it will be just fine.

Another difference is the 7d shoots a possible 8 shots per second, the 550d is less than 4
The 7d is sturdier and bigger and has the possibility to remotely control canon speedlites.

The 550d picture quality is as good as the 7d and it is half the price.
The 7d has the ability to adjust the focus on individual lenses if they front or back focus, this was also on my 50d and I never used this feature on either camera

Both IMHO are great cameras
