How not to loose the sky?

sorry if this has already been covered but I didn't read all of the responses. What you want will require you to shoot in manual. There is a very good example if you purchase the CreativeLive class on Zach and Jody Gray. But, if you can't purchase the class I will try to sum it up. Set you camera to manual. Set your ISO as low as the scene will allow. 100 is what I usually use. Then set your shutter speed to 100. Then point the camera at the sky and dial in your aperture so the meter reads zero. Now the camera is set for the sky. Using a light meter or trial and error, you set your off camera flash to match the same settings. Since the flash can't light the sky it will only light the foreground and your subjects and your sky will stay nice and detailed. I hope this helps. In AV or TV the camera will change things you don't want.

+1. Took me a while to get out of Av and Tv (or S on Nikon) modes. They have their purpose and work in certain situations, but this is not one of them. OP, force yourself to shoot in manual for a while so you can get a better grasp of where the camera needs to be in these situations.

It is not what you say it is how you say it......There could of been a way to approach the typo but when it is condescending, rude and insulting then I have a problem with it. We are on the internet for God sake the place where people use smiling faces to convey emotion! It just a hit a nerve....But I took a deep breath and I am better now.

And believe it or not Rotainmod I do hold a MSN degree (Master of Science in Nursing Education) which does absolutely nothing for my photography if anything it holds it back.....

Two major, critical parts of communication; body language and tone, are not transmitted on the internet. We cannot gauge the attitude of a person when we read their text so our minds 'fill in the blanks' for us. It was probably all just a miscommunication. Sometimes people can be rude on TPF, but most of the time I think they are just typing quickly and failing to be delicate with criticisms. I don't think that was the intention here. I can't speak for the others, but I just caution you, OP, not to get your feelings hurt. You're only reading the words, not seeing the person or hearing the tone of their voice.

We all make typos and I don't think it was a reflection on you by any means, but we also all have those little pet pieves (mine is the overuse and incorrect use of the word 'literally'. You know, like "This camera literally sucks". Oh really? From where does the suction come?). It may be helpful to just look at this through the lens of just trying to point out something you might not have noticed, rather than trying to be critical of you.

I fail to see what's condesceding, rude or insulting about that.

Do you know what capital letters in "internet" language means? It means your yelling at someone, then you bolded it and put it in red. So in my mind yes rude. Believe me I have to do computer charting all the time and when we are trying to convey someones tone of voice as loud it goes in caps. And what you seen as humor I seen as an insult so yes a bit of miscommunication there.
