How often do lens patents become production models?

Two weeks ago I saw Tamron had a patent on a 150-600 F5-6.3 VC USD lens. Made me drool a little to replace my 200-500. Just wondering if it is just a dream? It seems the last 3 patents I saw were the 24-70, a new 90 and the new 70-200 F2.8. The 24-70 was made,the other 2 were announced last month.

Any thoughts?

Exactly how often is hard to say (that's how I say "I have no clue"), but...it's really more a marketing decision than a patent decision. How much will it cost to produce vs how much it can be sold for in the market. I would say that a 150-600mm lens is crazy! It makes me think can it work? If they could achieve good resolution and keep down vignetting it could be one hell of a lens. Certainly if it was as good as the 200-500 people would buy it.

Really... if you wanted to find out, it wouldn't be difficult, simply search the US Patent Office archives for all records from Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Tamron, etc find out how many there are and check that against production.

Lens makers patent their ideas all of the time... It could well be coming, but it could also be a LOOOONG time on the making and it could not come to fruition at all. It's something they are working on developing. If the process passes their standards it'll come out. If it looks better on paper... They've GOT to patent any thing they are working on or someone else is going to sweep in and work it.
Don't even think about expecting it until the rumors start leaking about it-MANY rumors.

A 150mm-600mm zoom lens is INSANE!!!

But a 180mm-600mm zoom lens is...an historical fact...MF Zoom-Nikkor 180-600mm f/8.0 ED

Huh... learn something new every day. I thought I was pretty darn familiar with Nikon's catalogue over the years, but that one is new to me!

Holy glass cannon, batman! That thing is as big as the ultra rare 800mm canon L. I'd take that into the bush just to have something to beat a bear over the head with if I needed.
