how to be a good compact camera photographer

i am looking to get a dslr. until then, and until i can save the money, i am using a kodak easyshare mx1063 (Amazon.com: Kodak EasyShare MX1063 10.3MP 3x Optical/5x Digital Zoom HD Camera (Silver): Camera & Photo). it gets the job done... sometimes... i guess. My question is, well, i guess how do you take photos? wow that is really broad. there, i said it. i kind have been finding myself think that for a while. I don't know if its that broad and its more practice, but with this thing, i feel like, how am i supposed to do this? i have actually gotten some nice pictures, but any advice on using a compact effectively and in an advanced ​manner would be great! thank you

You are very limited because you can't change lenses, add filters, add external flash, etc..

But you can still learn good composition. You can learn to use the available lighting correctly, perhaps pick up a couple collapsible reflectors to reflect and/or diffuse light, as needed.

Start with those and you will be well on your way.

IMHO: The biggest thing you need to learn to make cool photos is lighting. Learn how to shape light and use it to your advantage.

Many people say composition is something that will improve your photos (it definitely will), but if your subject and light are interesting you can always apply the rule of thirds in post when you crop

Get some good lenses. Good lenses have made my shots looks alot better without being a great photographer.

Check out [posts] the photography of one of our members, Mike Lamb. It says in his signature that he uses a Kodak easy share camera for his photos and he does well with it.
