How to get airy almost desaturated look in family photos?

The wife likes the light airy look in some photos she's recently seen. It almost seems they are overexposed and desaturated some. It's kind of a common theme among many phtographers. Any tips or tricks both shooting and post process would be appreciated

if you reeeeeeally want to ruin a perfectly good picture with bright vibrant colors by desaturating it and making it look like you used the wrong camera settings....
If you use a photo editing program, they usually have a slider for saturation. just drag it back until you have trashed the photo to your desired amount.
to further the ruination, you can also move the exposure slider up a bit to overexpose, and jack up the highlights and shadows.
to complete the horrific ensemble, shoot into the sun for some awful sun flare that can also be exaggerated in post. :wink:

I think possibly a raised black point is part of it. Hard to tell from your description. Can you link to some examples of what she likes?
